A man who took drugs for erectile dysfunction and hid in his ex-girlfriend’s closet before springing out to imprison and rape her was jailed for 11 years.

Calling it an “unusually severe rape”, Mr Justice Andrew Chan Hing-wai said on Monday: “The court cannot understand how a person could so harm a woman he once loved.”

He said the court had observed a growing number of lovers harming their partners after separation. “The court cannot accept this, and I believe the public will not tolerate that either.”

Salesman Chan Chun-man, 29, had earlier been found guilty by the High Court on a count of rape and another of aggravated burglary. Three other counts of indecent assault, rape and aggravated burglary were dismissed.

The court had heard how Chan and the victim began dating in April 2014 but broke up the following August. However he tried to rekindle their romance.

On October 15, 2015, she returned home to find Chan hiding in a closet. He locked her in the room and drew on her face and back with a 16cm cutter, while she coaxed him into thinking they could get together again.

When she tried to run away the next morning, he pulled her back and threw her onto the bed, where he covered her mouth and raped her without using a condom.

Medical reports revealed multiple bruises and cuts across her neck and limbs.

It was later discovered that Chan took erectile dysfunction drugs in advance of his break-in and brought the cutter to kill them both if she refused to be with him.

In mitigation, a lawyer defending Chan said his client did not eventually go ahead with the plan.
