A delivery van driver was arrested in Mong Kok on Thursday after his vehicle smashed into and killed an elderly man.

Shortly before 9.45am, the 86-year-old man was walking with a stick, while his son pushed the man’s wife in a wheelchair. They tried to cross Shanghai Street at the junction with Soy Street.

According to police, the delivery van then came around the junction, knocking the elderly man unconscious.

The man was taken to Kwong Wah Hospital in Yau Ma Tei, where he was later certified dead.

Police arrested the 39-year-old driver on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death. A police spokesman said he passed a breathalyser test.

By 2pm, he was still being held for questioning and had not been charged.
