A man and a woman in Hong Kong were on Tuesday arrested over a HK$7 million money laundering case. The suspects, believed to be members of a triad-controlled loan shark syndicate, were accused of channelling funds through their bank and Jockey Club accounts over the past six years.

The 40-year-old man – a suspected triad member – was detained when officers raided his home in Chak On Estate, Shek Kip Mei at about 8am, according to police.

At the same time, detectives from the Kowloon East regional crime unit arrested the other suspect – a 45-year-old woman – in her Wan Tau Tong Estate flat in Tai Po.

“The two suspects were accused of laundering HK$7 million through their seven bank accounts and three Hong Kong Jockey Club accounts between May 2011 and March 2017,” a police source said.

He said the money was believed to be crime proceeds raised through loan-sharking activities.

Police suspect the pair were key figures of a syndicate.

During the raids, officers also seized some bank documents and three mobile phones in the two flats.

The arrests were made after the Kowloon East regional crime unit received information and investigated the syndicate.

As of 5pm, the two suspects were being held at Tsz Wan Shan Police Station for questioning and had not been charged.

A police spokesman said the operation was still in progress and it was possible further arrests would be made.

It is understood that the raids were part of a two-day citywide anti-triad operation that will end on Wednesday. The Organised Crime and Triad Bureau is coordinating the operation.
