At first glance, the 2014 Sony World Photography Awards shortlist

The 2014 Sony World Photography Awards attracted a record-breaking 140,000 entries from 166 countries, the highest in the competition's seven-year history.

The Sony World Photography Awards, organised by the London-based World Photography Organisation, seeks to recognise and reward outstanding work in three categories: Professional, Open and Youth. The 2014 awards attracted the highest number of entries ever, with almost 140,000 images from 166 countries, including seven by Chinese photographers. The 20 images in this gallery are a small selection chosen by staff at the South China Morning Post.
