Kazakhstan’s Gennady Golovkin defeated American Daniel ‘Miracle Man’ Jacobs in a unanimous points decision in Madison Square Garden to maintain his unbeaten record and retain his middleweight world titles in New York on Sunday morning (HK time).

In a tense fight, an out-of-sorts Golovkin struggled to figure out the busy Jacobs, who thought he had done enough to win the fight.

Golovkin had Jacobs down in the fourth round in a rare period of trouble for the American, who recovered well after the knockdown.

As time ran out, the 34-year-old Golovkin searched desperately for a knockout shot.

“Daniel (Jacobs) is my favourite fighter – I can’t destroy him,” said Golovkin after the fight. “I respect him.”

The win paves the way for a much vaunted showdown with Mexican Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.

“I’m ready. I’m hungry I want this fight. I’m very mad. I’m like an animal for this fight,” said the former Olympic champion.

“I think I won the fight,” said Jacobs. ”I thought I won by at least two rounds minimum.”
