Hong Kong remained on course to secure a best-ever finish at the women’s lacrosse World Cup after Katherine Barker scored five goals for a second consecutive game in Wednesday’s 14-8 play-off win over Belgium in England.

Jackie Keung Hoi-kay, Carrie Lam Ka-Wai, Kinuko Shiotani and Alex Tsai also each scored twice for Travis Taylor’s side in the consolidation place play-offs at Surrey Sports Park in Guildford.

Hong Kong will now play Switzerland, who Taylor’s side beat 7-3 in the pool stage earlier in the tournament, on Thursday for a place in the 17th place play-off final against either Mexico or Latvia.

Hong Kong finished 18th out of 19 teams at the 2013 World Cup in Canada after twice beating Sweden, although the 2017 edition now contains 25 teams.

“This late in the tournament it is always hard to get a lot of energy out of the team, but today we did very well and really did outpace them for most of the game,” said Taylor after watching Hong Kong follow up their 20-0 play-off win over Colombia with a third win of the tournament.

“We generally had better stick skills and were able to push the ball in the midfield and keep the pressure on them.

“I am very happy with the performance and are looking forward to playing the Swiss for the second time in the tournament.”

Defeat on Thursday would see Hong Kong drop down into the 19th place play-off final against the loser from the meeting between Mexico and Latvia.
