Soaring temperatures prompt Hong Kong weather warning
Observatory issues ‘very hot’ warning as temperatures in parts of New Territories hit 35 degrees

Hong Kong recorded its hottest day of the year on Saturday as the temperature hit 35 degrees Celsius in parts of the New Territories, prompting the Observatory to issue its first “very hot” weather warning.
The 35-degree temperature was recorded in Yuen Long, Sheung Shui, Chek Lap Kok and Lau Fau Shan. Many other parts of Hong Kong saw temperatures rise above 34 degrees. The Observatory recorded 32.5 degrees.
“A southwesterly airstream is bringing very hot weather to the coast of Guangdong,” the Observatory said. “The risk of heat stroke is high.”
The government advised Hongkongers to avoid prolonged outdoors activities to prevent heat stroke. The public was also recommended to drink plenty of water and avoid caffeine and alcohol.
The“very hot” warning was issued at 12.55pm on Saturday and remained in force for more than five hours.
The Observatory said Sunday would remain hot with sunny intervals and isolated showers. It had previously forecast showers and thunderstorms.
The highest temperature recorded at the Observatory last year was 35.6 degrees on July 9, although higher readings were recorded in other places.
