Newcomer Boy Oh Boy is bred to do well

Trainer Michael Chang Chun-wai has some nice young prospects in his hands and it was no difference with Boy Oh Boy following an eye-catching effort in the Audemars Piguet Lady Millenary Handicap (1,200m) on Sunday.

Trainer Michael Chang Chun-wai has some nice young prospects in his hands and it was no difference with following an eye-catching effort in the Audemars Piguet Lady Millenary Handicap (1,200m) on Sunday.

Boy Oh Boy arrived after a good trial win on August 28 in New Zealand and had not put a foot wrong since, impressing in both his Sha Tin trials and workouts.

He was well in the market and had to be hard ridden to occupy a position behind midfield after jostling with Sichuan Exec leaving the gate. He showed his inexperience when getting his head on his side and was caught in traffic behind Happy Homing and Regency Champion in the final 400m.

The gelding then forced his way between runners near the inside at the 200m and ran on steadily thereafter to finish third to Sichuan Exec. He also lost his right-hind plate in the run.

Boy Oh Boy, being a son of One Cool Cat and King Of Kings mare Slievenamon Marie, is bred to be a useful sprinter/miler and will excel at Happy Valley.

One Cool Cat was a five-time winner from 1,200m to 1,400m, including Group One successes at the Curragh, and has thrown five winners from eight other starters in Hong Kong, among them Cheer, Regency Winner, Fatboy Sugar and Giggles Forever.

Slievenamon Marie was a double winner over 1,600m and four-times placed from 29 starts in New Zealand and is out of mare Acushla Marie, who was an 11-time winner over 1,200m to 1,600m.

She has produced two other sprint winning foals, including the useful Keen Marie (by Falkirk).
