Rower Lee Ka-man grabs another silver medal for Hong Kong

Lee Ka-man came up short again in her quest for rowing gold and had to settle for a second silver medal on Thursday, this time in the women’s lightweight single sculls.

The 27-year-old was unable to mount a credible challenge throughout the 2,000-metre race against eventual winner Ji Yoo-jin of South Korea, at one stage dropping to third behind Soulmaz Abbasiazad of Iran. She came back strongly in the final stages to secure second place in eight minutes and 6.6 seconds, with Ji clocking 8:01.

“I can normally finish within eight minutes under such conditions but today I could not make it,” said Lee, who also took silver in the women’s single sculls on Wednesday. “I have been eager to win the gold in the lightweight category because I am among the top rowers in Asia. Perhaps I have put myself under too much pressure which has hindered my performance. Today, from warm-up to the end of the race, I could not deliver my best.”

Hong Kong secured their second silver medal of the day through the men’s lightweight quadruple sculls. The quartet of Chow Kwong-wing, Tang Chiu-mang, Leung Chun-shek and Kwan Ki-cheong finished behind the powerful Chinese rowers, clocking 6:07.39 to the mainlanders’ 6:01.15.

With the rowing events at the Chungju Tangeum Lake Centre finished, Hong Kong can look back in satisfaction, having won one gold and four silver medals – their best-ever result at the Asian Games.
