World title for Ng On-yee - Hong Kong star wins doubles with Katrina Wan

Confidence-booster ahead of defence of her women’s singles world crown

Red-hot Ng On-yee claimed her first world title of the year after winning the women’s pairs title at the World Championships in Leeds. The Hong Kong woman and her partner, Katrina Wan Ka-kai, cruised to a 4-1 win in the final over Maria Catalano, of England, and Latvia’s Tatjana Vasiljeva at the Northern Snooker Centre.

The victory is a major confidence-booster for the 25-year-old Ng ahead of the defence of her world singles title, which starts on Monday. Ng also claimed the highest break with a 55 in the final.

Among the first to congratulate Ng was Hong Kong’s secretary for home affairs, Lau Kong-wah.

“Ng On-yee and Katrina Wan have shown excellent performance in the competition, and we are all thrilled with their achievements. I wish them well in keeping up their efforts in the remaining competitions to bring glory to Hong Kong,” said Lau.

The pair won £480 for their victory while Ng also picked up £50 for the highest break.

It was Ng’s third ladies pairs world title, having won in 2013 and 2014 with So Man-yan. The pair lost in the semi-finals last year after they were defeated by the England team featuring Reanne Evans.

But a new partner has fired up Ng as the Hong Kong pair removed the obstacles one by one before chalking up their first major success as a team.

They received a bye in the preliminary round and then easily thrashed Aimee Benn and Lily Dobson, of England, 3-0 in the best-of-five quarter-finals.

The pair were unstoppable in the last four as they defeated Stephanie Daughtery, of England, and Park Jeong-min, of South Korea, by the same scoreline before storming into the final.

The mixed doubles event was to start on Friday with Ng pairing up with England’s Oliver Lines of England while Wan will team up with England’s Sanderson Lam.

Another Hong Kong player, Jaique Ip Wan-in will partner Hong Kong’s world junior champion, Cheung Ka-wai.
