Eight-time world weight division champion Manny Pacquiao is on course to earn his biggest payday against unbeaten American Chris Algieri, according to promoter Bob Arum.

We don’t get people like him who are college graduates or who are so articulate. He is really a breath of fresh air for the sport of boxing and people have taken to him

Pacquiao is guaranteed US$24 million in this weekend’s Clash in Cotai II and will earn more from US pay-per-view (PPV) revenue, meaning he could easily rake in US$30 million before taxes.

Arum said Pacquiao’s fight against Algieri would definitely be “one of his bigger purses” – thanks in large part to Macau’s friendly tax laws.

“He could easily top US$30 million, that’s what we are hoping,” said Arum. “This will be one of his bigger purses, and it’s free of US taxes because he’s not fighting in the United States. His net income will be by far his biggest [he will earn],” he said.

Pacquiao will not face the almost 40 per cent income tax that would be imposed if he was fighting on American soil. Macau’s top marginal rate is only 12 per cent, but Pacquiao might not have to pay even that much under a special provision.

Arum confirmed that Pacquiao would earn a rematch even if he loses to Algieri. Asked if Algieri would get a rematch if he loses by a narrow margin, Arum said: “Then it will be up to the fighters and the promoters to see whether they want to do a rematch. But there’s no legal provision that mandates a rematch except if Algieri beats Manny.”

The last time Pacquiao fought in Macau, against Brandon Rios, he earned about US$20 million, with roughly 475,000 PPV purchases.
