Chelsea star Ramires and Roma’s Gervinho latest big names heading to Chinese Super League

Clubs splashing the cash ahead of new season

The Chinese economy may be in trouble, but that doesn’t seem to have affected the country’s football teams, with international stars Ramires and Gervinho the latest players set for massive-money moves to the Chinese Super League.

Chelsea midfielder Ramires is in line to join Jiangsu Suning, English media reported, for a fee which could be as much as £25 million (HK$277 million).

And Ivory Coast striker Gervinho has said farewell to his Roma teammates ahead of an expected move to Hebei Fortune, reports in Italy said.

“I can confirm we’re currently in talks, we’ve received interesting offers and when a player wants to leave the club there’s little you can do,” Roma sporting director Mauro Baldissoni said. “It could be settled very quickly.”

Former Arsenal player Gervinho has hit only six league goals for Roma this season and doubts over his future at the club emerged when coach Rudi Garcia was sacked two weeks ago.

Ramires, who signed for Chelsea for £17 million in 2010 from Benfica, has not started since Jose Mourinho was sacked as manager.

Chinese teams have been splashing the cash ahead of the new season starting in March, with Brazilian players particularly popular – champions Corinthians have had four players signed by Chinese clubs already.
