A fire tore through part of Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua’s Hongkou Stadium on Tuesday morning with local media reporting no injuries.

The blaze was reported to have started at around 8.30am with no explanation given as to what caused it.

The latest reports suggested the fire had been contained but shocking footage showed the blaze engulfing one end of the ground during the morning rush hour.

There are no official reports on the extent of the damage but Cameron Wilson, a Chinese football analyst based in Shanghai, said the fire damage appeared to be confined to an area inside the stadium.

“There’s a part of the roof been burned but from what I know of the stadium having been going for years it doesn’t look like anything irreparable,” he said.

Local media also reported that a section of the city’s underground system had to be closed.
