Trainer John Size has had a great association with owner Tung Moon-fai and they look to have another rising star in following an eye-catching second in the Class Four Sunning Handicap (1,400m) at Sha Tin on Sunday.
The owner-trainer combination have campaigned successfully with the likes of Unique Jewellery (2009 winner of the Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong Derby Trial), Fashion Jewellery, Classic Jewellery, Supreme Jewellery and Tan Tat Baby.
Turbo Jewellery had five barrier trials on the dirt and turf at Happy Valley and looked from his lead-up work to be suited first-up by 1,400m.
Turbo Jewellery was shuffled back when nearly climbing on the heels of Supreme Genki at the 800m, approached the final bend with four behind him, angled into the clear widest out at the 400m and came up with a spirited run to pip Winning Bear in the final stride for second and three-quarters off front-running victor Maelstrom.
Turbo Jewellery is bred to get up to 2,200m and is a son of Oratorio, a champion performer who was a winner from 1,200m to 2,000m. He also won the Group One Coral Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park in Britain and Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown and has fathered two winners from eight local performers, including the smart Military Attack.
His twice-placed dam, Overboard, is a daughter of the influential stayer Rainbow Quest and is a half-sister to Red Sea, a Group winner of the Coventry Stakes in Britain and Connaught Cup in Canada, and Italian Group winner Sailing. Overboard produced four winning foals at 1,800m or further, including three successful hurdlers.
