Ticket ballot planned for next year's Sevens

Hong Kong Sevens organisers will try a public ballot next year for the hottest tickets in town after incurring the wrath of fans when the online sales system crashed this year.

Hong Kong Sevens organisers will try a public ballot next year for the hottest tickets in town after incurring the wrath of fans when the online sales system crashed this year.

The registration window for the public ballot will begin at 9am on Thursday and end at 5pm on Monday, February 4, next year. Applicants can register via the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union website (www.hkrugby.com) and the official Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens website (www.hksevens.com).

Following the seven-week registration period, 4,000 public tickets will be distributed via ballot on Thursday, February 7, next year. The tournament will be held from March 22-24 at Hong Kong Stadium.

“The HKRFU is pleased to confirm tickets will be held via public ballot,” Hong Kong Rugby Football Union chairman Trevor Gregory said on Wednesday.

“The change in retailing method is in keeping with our commitment to ensure that tickets are distributed as conveniently and equitably as possible. With a seven-week registration period we believe all interested spectators will be able to register at their convenience and the ‘luck of the draw’ will ensure the fairest spread of tickets to the public.”

Ticket prices remain fixed at this year’s tournament levels with an adult, three-day ticket priced at HK$1,500, while children’s tickets are HK$150 for youth aged 12 and under on or before March 22, next year. A HK$100 administration fee (one per each successful ballot application) will be levied.

For the first time in the event’s 38-year history, 28 teams will take part.
