The Sevens is held in spring, so it's little wonder that quite a few people over the years have met their partners at the stadium. However, spring weather doesn't come to mind when recalling the 1992 Sevens, when day became night at 4pm and aqua-rugby reigned supreme.
For Frances Drummond, the heavens opening may also have brought out Cupid. "The weather was appalling - the players were running about in one big mud bath," recalls the Sydney-based lawyer. "My friend and I were sitting under a rare covered part of the old stadium when we went to get some food. Upon our return we found our seats taken by two men. One of them, Gary, looked quite nice, so while we gave them some grief for stealing our seats, we got chatting."
Gary had only arrived the day before on the first stop of a round-the-world journey, but fate intervened. "Gary never left Hong Kong on the rest of his trip. We bumped into each other again through playing hockey and started dating, marrying four years later. We made the journey back last year to celebrate the 20th anniversary of our meeting, never thinking we'd also be back here for our 21st!"
