Helene Spirit 'deserves Tokyo trip'

Trainer Caspar Fownes admits Helene Spirit will be thrown in the deep end in next month's Yasuda Kinen in Japan, but he says the Champions Mile runner-up deserves his place in the race.

Fownes accepted an invite for Helene Spirit to join John Size's Glorious Days in the Group One event at Tokyo on June 2 after a fighting second to Dan Excel at Sha Tin two weeks ago.

Gerald Mosse has been booked for the ride, replacing Matthew Chadwick who rode the gelding in the Champions Mile.

"He will be an outsider there for sure, but he has earned his spot in the race. He took on the good horses here at level weights and got within a whisker of winning," Fownes said.

"The owners are a great bunch of people and they wanted to go, so we will try our luck. He can sit forward or come from behind ... he is pretty versatile. He is honest and even if he is a big outsider, we'll be having some fun and trying our best."

Helene Spirit and Glorious Days will travel together next Wednesday, with the pair required to spend six days in quarantine on arrival before moving to Tokyo Racecourse at Fuchu.

In other news, trainer Sean Woods' appeal against a HK$100,000 fine for misconduct has been rescheduled for a hearing next Monday.

Woods was charged under Rule 155 (24) that states "no person shall be guilty of behaviour or conduct which … could bring into disrepute the good name of the club or any activity under the control and management of the club" for comments made in a article in March.
