British champion Richard Hughes to replace Joao Moreira for Jockeys' Championship

Champion British jockey Richard Hughes has been engaged to replace Joao Moreira in the Longines International Jockeys’ Championship at Happy Valley on December 4.

Brazilian star Moreira lost his place in the star-studded line-up when he incurred a suspension at Happy Valley on Wednesday night and he had not lodged any intention to appeal the penalty when the 24-hour deadline passed on Thursday.

His place will now be taken by Hughes, 40, who last week secured his second consecutive British championship and did so as the first rider to win more than 200 races in the season since Kieren Fallon in 2003.

Hughes will stay on for the Longines Hong Kong International Races, where he is booked to ride four-time Group One winner Sky Lantern in the Hong Kong Mile.
