Valencia crowned winners of LFP World Challenge

Two Spanish teams showed their brand of attacking soccer, but only a crowd of 3,700 turned up to watch

Despite two top Spanish teams playing attractive soccer at Mong Kok Stadium on Wednesday night, only a crowd of 3,700 turned up to watch the LFP World Challenge.

Although not a bad figure for a domestic competition, the turnout was a surprise considering the line-up of players for Villarreal, who finished sixth in La Liga this season, and Valencia, two-time finalists of the European Champions League.

Local fans missed some good soccer, said Hong Kong Football Association chairman Brian Leung Hung-tak. He also said it was an opportunity to showcase the quality of the Spanish game and promote exchange with Hong Kong.

After three 45-minute matches, Valencia won the trophy with two victories - 3-1 over BC Rangers and 1-0 over Villareal.

Rangers won the final match against Villarreal after a 1-1 draw. Based on the rules, the hosts claimed second as they scored one more goal.
