Hong Kong's Rex Tso back in training for Champions of Gold card
Unbeaten 'Wonder Kid' has recovered from injuries suffered in his previous Macau bout
Rex Tso Sing-yu will resume training this week for next month's Champions of Gold in Macau after recovering from injuries suffered in his last fight.
There were doubts Hong Kong's unbeaten super flyweight "Wonder Kid" would miss the CotaiArena event on July 19 after he sustained injuries to his hand and nose in winning his 13th straight professional fight on the undercard of last month's Featherweight Fury.
The 26-year-old southpaw suffered broken blood vessels in his nose and severe bruising in both hands in his unanimous decision against Thailand's Ratchasak Kokietgym, who twice knocked down the Hong Kong star in the third round.
Tso, who has made a remarkable recovery, said he would be ready to return to the ring in less than five weeks. "I feel well again to return to training and I will do some light work first before I head back to the Philippines for three weeks of intensive training," said Tso (13-0-0, 8 KOs). "Luckily, my injuries have healed and I'm pleased I will get to fight in front of my fans in Macau again."
Trainer and manager Jay Lau Chi-yuen said Tso would fight a six-round bout against a yet-to-be-named opponent at a catch weight of 118 pounds on the undercard of Champions of Gold, which would be headlined by China's two-time Olympic gold medallist Zou Shiming.
"Rex won't be putting his titles on the line this time. We want him to fight in July because, if he doesn't take part next month, he won't have another chance until November when hopefully, he will fight for a world title. He needs competition to stay active," said Lau.
"Rex saw the doctor and has been given the all-clear. He will wear special headgear in training. We will work on his footwork again and try to correct the errors he made last time."
Co-organiser Top Rank has three possible opponents for Tso, who will fight for US$30,000.
"Rex's opponent will not be as tough as Kokietgym. Rex was severely tested last time and we don't want him to get seriously hurt and dent his chances of a world title fight," said Lau.
