Adderly Fong Cheun-yue spoke of his delight after taking a giant leap forward in his motor racing career as he became the first Hong Kong driver to pilot a Formula One car during a race weekend.
The 24-year-old completed 25 laps for Sauber during practice for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
“It feels really strange I have to admit. They are all superstars I used to watch only on television, and all of a sudden, I heard the engineer talking to me through the radio, telling me to beware of Fernando Alonso who is fast approaching from the back,” said Fong.
The driver will return to Hong Kong on Tuesday before taking part in his final race this year, the this year Audi LMS Cup season finale in three weeks’ time, at the same Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi.
“Perhaps that is why people were saying it is unfair for me to familiarise myself with the track in a F1 race car,” Fong joked.
He hopes to win a place as an F1 reserve driver for next season.
