Hong Kong's Sarah Lee sprints to another title in Australia

Champion cyclist beats Morton Stephanie, the reigning Commonwealth Games champion, at the South Australian Grand Prix meeting in Adelaide

Hong Kong’s champion cyclist Sarah Lee Wai-sze was unstoppable on Wednesday night as she swept to her second victory in women’s sprint racing in Australia in a week.

Against a strong field featuring top Australian sprinters, Lee made no mistake with an overwhelming win over Morton Stephanie, the reigning Commonwealth Games champion, with a 2-0 triumph in a best-of-three final at the South Australian Grand Prix meeting in Adelaide.

This came heard on the heels of her win over mainlander Guo Shuang in the final of the Melbourne Cup on Wheels meeting.

Guo also lost to Lee in the semi-finals in Adelaide but later took the bronze medal over Olympic champion Anna Meares of Australia in the third-place run-off.

Stephanie led the qualifications when she topped the flying 200 metres with a time of 10.937 seconds while Lee was second in 11.092 seconds, followed by Guo (11.172) and Meares (11.232).

The quartet had little trouble working their way through to the semi-finals where Lee beat Guo and Stephanie edged out her compatriot.

Coach Shen Jinkang said his charge did an exceptional job because Lee was able to win against world-class sprinters.

The event will continue on Thursday with Lee taking part in the women’s keirin, where she is expecting a tough challenge from the same opponents.
