South China defeated defending champions Winling 88-76 to force a decider in the best-of-five series of the A1 Division basketball championship play-offs at Queen Elizabeth Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Caroliners did everything right to tie the series at 2-2, while Winling missed many opportunities and struggled after half-time. They could not find their range outside the keyhole area, missing numerous three-pointers.

South China scored with better frequency and led by 18 points at one stage in the final quarter. Kepkay top-scored for Winling with 26 points, while Duncan Reid of South China had 17 points.

South China forward Chan Cheung-man also had a sharp performance on the night and scored 16 points.

“I think the key to winning the match is that we improved in the flow of passing and scoring. Every player on our side can attack and our rivals couldn’t focus on our key defenders. They found it very difficult to handle,” said Chan.

“I didn’t make it to the start list for many games this season. I was among the starting five today so I told myself I had to play well.”

The two sides meet again next Tuesday.
