Local players must work harder to earn their place on Hong Kong team, says Leung

But it creates healthy competition with naturalised players deserving their place

Hong Kong B captain Leung Kwun-chung said the influx of naturalised soccer players has raised the bar for home-grown talent who want to represent Hong Kong at international level, but he has no complaints about that.

The 23-year-old, who led his side to a 2-0 victory over Macau in the annual Interport Cup yesterday, said they must become more competitive in order to secure a place in the senior squad.

"This is a fair competition as naturalised players are also Hong Kong citizens and are eligible to represent Hong Kong in the sport," said Leung, who has been considered one of the future stars of Hong Kong soccer, along with his younger brother, Nok-hang.

"But of course we are now facing more difficulties as physically there is a big difference between these foreigners and local players. We must work harder in all aspects in order to catch the eye of selectors.

"I think I still need more exposure and experience at club and international level before I can get a place in the senior squad. Although I am not getting any younger, there is more to learn before I can become an established player for the Hong Kong team."

The brothers, who play for Pegasus in the Premier League, were at the centre of defence against Macau at Siu Sai Wan Sports Ground yesterday.

But they were hardly tested against the amateurs from Macau as Hong Kong dominated the game.

Hui Ka-lok broke the deadlock midway through the second period.

Substitute Chan Siu-kwan added to the tally when he glanced home a Luk Chi-ho free-kick in the closing stages.

"There is room for improvement and hopefully we can do better," said the captain.

Meanwhile, a hefty HK$1 million bonus has been offered by head of delegation, Chim Pui-chung, if Hong Kong can beat China in their World Cup qualifier at Mong Kok Stadium on Tuesday.
