Hong Kong teenage cyclist Leung Hoi-wah strikes gold at Asian Championships
17-year-old wins girls’ points race in Izu, Japan
Hong Kong’s Leung Hoi-wah struck gold in winning the girls’ points race at the Asian Championships in Izu, Japan, on Tuesday.
The 17-year-old lapped the peloton midway through the 20km race and collected the highest number of points, 38, among nine starters after 80 laps.
She showed a lot of courage in breaking away from the peloton to win the race
Rinata Ahkmetcha of Kazahkstan came second with 20 points. Third place went to Yumena Hosoya of Japan with 18 points.
“She showed a lot of courage in breaking away from the peloton to win the race,” said coach Shen Jinkang.
Leung is seen as having a bright future in cycling. She is the younger sister of Leung Chun-wing, a member of the men’s team pursuit which finished fourth in a qualifier.
Meanwhile, Cheung King-lik who collected two gold medals on the road last week, will start in the men’s points race on Wednesday while Sarah Lee Wai-sze will be trying to defend her title in the women’s time trial.
Lee has won the 500 metres’ event over the last five years.
