Record-breaking long jumper Chan Ming-tai named Hong Kong Athlete of the Year
Marathon star Christy Yiu wins the women’s category in the Amateur Athletic Association awards
Long jumper Chan Ming-tai, who twice broke the Hong Kong men’s record last year, was named 2015 Athlete of the Year by the Amateur Athletic Association on Tuesday night.
“This is my first title in the senior category after winning the junior title three times in a row,” said a delighted Chan, who set a mark of 7.89 metres at the World University Games in Gwangju where he finished fourth.
“My next target is to break the 8-metre barrier. The qualifying mark for the Rio Olympics is 8.15 metres.
The women’s award went to long-distance runner Christy Yiu Kit-ching, who has qualified for the marathon in Rio.
