Hong Kong’s windsurfers kicked off their Olympics campaign and though there was an excellent start for Michael Cheng Chun-leung, Sonia Lo Sin-lam was hampered by some rubbish in the water around Sugarloaf Mountain in Guanabara Bay.
Cheng was nicely placed in fourth after the first three of the 12 opening races, finishing third, sixth and 11th.

"I am happy to have a good start, but today’s just the beginning,” he said. “There’s still nine more races in qualifying round.
But Lo has plenty of work to do if she is to make it into the top 10 to qualify for the medal race. She is 18th after finishing 15 in all three races – ironically, after saying the stories about pollution in the bay had been over-hyped, she had her board snagged by plastic bags in two of the three.
"Compared with the European sailors, my board speed wasn't good enough to keep in front of the fleet,” she said.
“But today's just the first race day, I will keep it up and focus on the upcoming races."
Race 4, 5 and 6 begin at midnight HKT on August 10.
