The wait goes on: Hong Kong in danger of failing to win a Paralympic fencing gold after losing out to China
Hong Kong has won a fencing gold in each of the last two Paralympic Games
Hong Kong is still looking for its first wheelchair fencing gold after the women’s epee team finished with silver in the open category at the Paralympic Games in Rio on Thursday.
At Carioca Arena 3, Yu Chui-yee, Chan Yui-chong and Justine Charissa Ng again fell short in the final as they were beaten by China 45-35.
The result is already an improvement on the bronze medal Hong Kong managed in the same event at the London Games four years ago.
Watch: Hong Kong compete in the epee team final
The same trio will take part in the team foil on the final day of competition in wheelchair fencing along with the men’s foil team featuring Tam Chik-sum, Chan Wing-kin and Cheong Meng-chai on Friday. It will be the last chance for the wheelchair fencers to claim a gold medal in Rio following two silvers and a bronze so far.
Yu claimed a silver in the women’s individual foil (category A) while Chan Yu-chong was third in the individual epee (category B).
Hong Kong has never failed to win a gold medal in wheelchair fencing since the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens. Among these, Yu has clinched seven team and individual gold medals while Chan has five.
They were not without chances against China in the team epee and were leading 25-22 at the midway point in the final, but the mainlanders, who have been the beneficiaries of heavy investment for disabled sports in recent years, came back to take the lead 30-26 and never looked back.
In boccia, Leung Yuk-wing had the opportunity to clinch his first gold medal in Rio after reaching the final in the mixed individual (BC4). The two-time Laureus World Sports Award nominee, who won his first Paralympic gold for Hong Kong at the 2004 Athens Games, will take on Samuel Andrejcik of Slovakia in the final.
Ho Yuen-kei and Leung Mei-yee , the two Hong Kong bowlers who also made it to the knockout stage in the BC1 and BC3 category respectively, were eliminated in the quarter-finals.
