Hong Kong’s Angus Ng Ka-long into semi-finals of badminton’s French Open with upset win
Youngster beats third seed Jan O Jorgensen for first time
Hong Kong’s Angus Ng Ka-long stormed into the men’s singles semi-finals at badminton’s French Open after stunning third seed Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark in straight games on Friday.
After surviving three game points in the opening game, Ng, the eighth seed, took the lead with a 27-25 win after deuce over the Dane before sealing the victory with a comfortable 21-12 run in the second.
It was the first victory for the 22-year-old Hong Kong Olympian in his three matches against Jorgensen after losing in the last two All England Championships.
Ng will now take on Lee Hyun Il of South Korea in the famous Coubertin Court in Paris for his third attempt to reach a Superseries final; he lost his two previous last-four outings, last year’s Hong Kong Open and the Singapore Open in April.
South Korean Lee, who upset fifth seed Chou Tien Chen of Taiwan 24-22, 21-16, has won both previous encounters against Ng, at the 2014 Canada Open final and last year’s Thailand Open, both in straight games.
The other semi-final features up-and-coming Shi Yuqi of China and Hsu Jen Hao of Taiwan.
