Australia’s Daniel Nisbet beats Alex Kang in play-off to win PGA Tour China Series Clearwater Bay Open title

The pair finish level at the top of the leaderboard at Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club at 15-under-par after an enthralling final round on Sunday

Australia’s Daniel Nisbet eagled the first play-off hole to win the PGA Tour China Series Clearwater Bay Open after edging out American Alex Kang on Sunday.

The pair had finished tied at the top of the leaderboard at 15-under-par after overnight leader Kang could only manage a final round of one-under 69 having started the day in possession of a seemingly commanding four-shot lead.

With Nisbet in the clubhouse after a six-under 64, Kang had a chance to claim victory outright in regulation but two putted the final green from 12 feet.

That meant the pair headed back up the 18th and Nisbet enjoyed a stroke of luck as his tee shot bounced off a cart path and into the fairway.

Alex Kang.

That set up an iron shot to 10 feet, and with Kang having to chip up from the side of the green following a wayward second shot having initially found the fairway off the tee in a more conventional way, Nisbet held his nerve to seal victory.

“The tee shot was very lucky,” said Nisbet. “But I couldn't let that get to me and I had to hit a solid shot in for my second.

“I have been hitting some good iron shots all week and I backed that up with a good shot.”

American Charlie Saxon, who won the last China Series event in Beijing, claimed third a shot off the pace after a five-under 65 having missed a long eagle putt on the 18th green which would have earned him a place in the play-off.
