Can the Hong Kong Marathon be a fun run? Depends what you’re wearing

A look at some of the more unusual choices of apparel spotted out on the course from T-Rex to the characters of Super Mario

A world away from the elite athletes that finished their distances within sight of the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon course records were some rather more colourful characters.

In some cases that was literal.

Like these three runners who jumped straight out of a video game.

The Super Mario Brothers, Mario and Luigi, hopped over the line with Toad. Fun guys.

Dragon Ball Z gets an ‘A’ for his costume and an ‘A+’ for the hair.

Clearly this was not the only comic to feature on runners’ moodboards ahead of the race.

Hong Kong’s very own Din-Dong made an appearance at the start line at Tsim Sha Tsui, not too far from where the cartoon cat has a three-metre statue on the Avenue of Stars.

This fry guy was sure not to impinge on any globally registered trademarks – his costume featured a large golden W.

Maybe it was just coincidence that he was the first runner in costume under the arch at the finish line.

Forrest Gump makes sense as a costume choice, as it is essentially running gear with the addition of a remarkable beard. Impressive nonetheless. And too fast for us even at the end of the race.

You don’t even need a costume to make the marathon a fun run as these runners proved by juggling all the way.
