Hong Kong lost their first match at the Asian Cricket Council Trophy Elite tournament in Dubai yesterday when the United Arab Emirates beat them by six wickets. Batting first, Hong Kong got off to a good start with the openers putting on a stand of 61. But after that, wickets fell at regular intervals and they were dismissed for 215 off the last ball of their 50 overs. Nine of the Hong Kong batsmen reached double figures, Nizakat Khan top-scoring with 40. UAE's reply was led by Shaiman Anwar (83) with Abdul Shakoor (33) and Saqib Ali (38) also making useful contributions. UAE reached their winning target with six wickets and 46 balls to spare. Despite the defeat, Hong Kong still top the five-team group B thanks to a superior run rate after three matches. New Zealand attacked with clinical precision to beat South Africa 32-16 last night, ending the inaugural Rugby Championship with a perfect six wins from six games and hammering home their dominance. Jonathan Carril scored on his debut for Southern as they held visitors Sun Pegasus to a 3-3 draw in the RedMR First Division at Aberdeen Sports Ground yesterday. Carril had to leave Kitchee after the Hong Kong soccer champions signed Pablo Counago, a member of the Spain team who won the 1999 World Youth Cup. Counago is likely to make his debut against Yokohama today at Mong Kok Stadium. Yokohama have increased ticket prices by HK$40 to HK$100 to test the response of fans.
