HK riders show their prowess in Hainan

Hong Kong riders dominated the sixth stage of the Tour of Hainan, one of Asia's top category cycling races, as youngster Cheung King-lok won the 172-kilometre stage from Danzhou to Dongfang in three hours, 59 minutes and 21 seconds. Also finishing in an identical time were Yeung Ying-hon, third, and Choi Ki-ho, fourth. Dmitriy Gruzdev of Kazakhstan, who rides for professional team Astana, was second. The victory gives Cheung a great opportunity to grab the overall lead in the US$350,000 race during today's gruelling 215km stage from Dongfang to Wuzhishan as he is only four seconds behind leader Alexander Serebyakov of Russia. Serebyakov, who led from stage two, said Hong Kong riders were very strong in the mountains and with a category one climb, he would face a difficult task to safeguard his slender advantage. The four riders broke away from the peloton after 64km and built up a 55-second lead. They slowed down in the final stages but were still able to maintain a 15-second lead at the finish.
