Former world boxing champion Hector "Macho" Camacho was in critical condition yesterday, after being shot in his native Puerto Rico. Doctors and his family are expected to wrestle with whether to take him off life support. Doctors said Camacho was expected to survive after he was shot in the face, while sitting in a car on Tuesday night in his hometown of Bayamon. But his condition worsened and his heart stopped at one point, said Dr Ernesto Torres, director of the Centro Medico trauma centre in San Juan. "He's battling minute to minute. This is the most important fight of his life," Torres said outside the hospital. Torres said two specialists would determine his level of brain activity. They will then consult with other doctors and Camacho's mother, who was expected to arrive from New York, said Ismael Leandry, a friend and former manager. Camacho, 50, was outside a bar in a parked Ford Mustang with a friend when he was shot in the face. His 49-year-old friend Adrian Mojica Moreno was killed, police said. AP
