National Hockey League owners were reviewing the latest offer from the players' union, but both sides remain far apart as they try to end the two-month-long lockout. "We're still far apart," NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said. "But hopefully there's some momentum so we can bring this process to a successful conclusion." Bettman said the league was losing between C$18 million (HK$139.86 million) to C$20 million per day, while players were losing between C$8 million to C$10 million per day. AFP
Swimming Australia chief executive Kevin Neil resigned from his post yesterday in the wake of the team's poor showing at the London Olympics, which was tarred by reports of pranks and ill-discipline. Australia's swimmers won just one gold medal, six silvers and three bronzes in London - their lowest tally in the pool since the 1992 Barcelona Games - and were without an individual gold medallist for the first time since Montreal in 1976. Marlon Samuels hit a fighting century to help the West Indies reach 241 for two at the close of play on the second day of the second and final cricket test against Bangladesh yesterday. The 31-year-old Jamaican was 109 not out and added 198 runs for the unfinished third-wicket stand with Darren Bravo (85 not out) to help the tourists recover from the early loss of their openers.
