Shane Warne hit with fine and suspension

Shane Warne has been suspended for a match and fined A$4,500 (HK$36,200) after being found guilty of three of the four misconduct charges arising from his physical confrontation with West Indies all-rounder Marlon Samuels in a Twenty20 Big Bash game on Sunday. "I'm disappointed in some of my actions last night," Warne said. "Also I'm pretty disappointed with the severity of the penalties. That was pretty harsh." Warne used social media to announce he would not appeal against the ban, saying he hoped the Stars could win without him and qualify for the semi-finals. "Sport can be emotional and at times very passionate, too," he tweeted. "Yes, I went a bit too far with my emotions and passion, but was standing up for my teammate and trying to get us back in the game." AP

Gusts delay Hawaii golf event for third day

Mother Nature again turned nasty at the PGA Tour's season-opening Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Hawaii, forcing play to be abandoned for a third consecutive day due to strong, gusting winds. "We tried," Slugger White, the PGA Tour's vice-president of rules and competition, said. "We were having gusts out there of about 48 miles per hour. Balls were blowing off the green and we couldn't even get a ball to come to rest on the 12th green when we stopped." Reuters

Nuggets hand Lakers third loss in a row

The Denver Nuggets dropped the stumbling Los Angeles Lakers further into the doldrums with a 112-105 NBA win despite some fourth-quarter fireworks from Kobe Bryant. Ty Lawson scored 21 points and 10 assists and Danilo Gallinari hit five of his 20 in the final seconds to kill the Lakers' rally and send them to a third successive defeat. The Lakers (15-18) left with more than their pride bruised, Pau Gasol exiting the contest in the fourth quarter after having his nose bloodied by an elbow from JaVale McGee. Centre Dwight Howard also aggravated a right shoulder injury and will undergo scans. Reuters
