Hong Kong stun Wales and Ireland to reach World Cup of Darts quarter-final

Hong Kong caused two huge shocks at the World Cup of Darts to reach the quarter-finals

Hong Kong caused two huge shocks at the World Cup of Darts to reach the quarter-finals.

Scott McKenzie and Royden Ting-chi Lam first stunned seventh seeds Wales on Friday night, Lam notching a sensational 131 checkout as they beat Mark Webster and Jamie Lewis in Frankfurt, Germany.

And their giantkilling wasn’t done there as they ousted 10th seeds Republic of Ireland 2-1 in the last 16 on Saturday night.

“I hope the darts can come together and I can be more relaxed in the quarter-finals,” McKenzie told www.PDC.tv.

“Darts in Asia is booming and there are so many good players out there, and it’s a proud moment for Asia.”

Next up for the pair in the early hours of Monday morning (Hong Kong time) are number 2 seeds Scotland in the quarter-finals.

“I was so nervous that my hand was shaking,” said Lam after the Wales win, “but that shows what it means to us and also all our supporters who stayed up during the night in Hong Kong to watch us.”

Scotland have world champion Gary Anderson, but he said he’s not taking HK lightly. “I didn’t see their first round game but they played well so it’s good to be through but it will be hard again to play Hong Kong,” he said.

“They’re two great lads and they’ve done brilliantly so far, so we’ll know what we’re up against.”
