This is not our boat, we don’t live here ... we’re staying on a boat – coach Mike Krzyzewski does funny rant about US cruise ship housing NBA stars
While most of the competitors are staying at the Athletes’ Village, the NBA star-laden Americans have put themselves up on the Silver Cloud as they prepare to bag another gold
Ahoy there, Captain K.
Mike Krzyzewski has warmed up to staying on a cruise ship during the Rio Olympics.
The US men’s and women’s Olympic basketball teams are being housed on the 196-cabin, Silver Cloud cruise ship and the luxurious accommodations have been a talking point even before the arrival of the Americans.
Krzyzewski, who plans to step down as Team USA’s coach after these Games end, was asked by a French reporter about his team’s living quarters following a 113-69 win over Venezuela on Monday.
Coach K proceeded to go on a comical rant about his team’s floating lodgings.
“Well, we don’t live on a boat,” he said. “We’re staying on a boat. I actually live in Durham, North Carolina. I have a swimming pool and once in a while I get on a raft and lie in there. But I’ve never really thought about living on a boat. Since 1992 the US teams have stayed in different locations and those are the accommodations here and that was good.”
The typically serious Krzyzewski was just clearing his throat.
“It’s not our boat,” he deadpanned, “and we’re not the only people on the boat. There are other people on the boat that we see, that we say ‘good morning’ to and ‘hello.’
“We’ve actually made friends on the boat. I never knew I would have boat friends. In fact, now that I’m talking about it, I might go buy a boat. But I’d have to have a bigger swimming pool. It’s a place to stay and we’re here to play basketball.
“And I’ll tell you what, the people in Rio have been unbelievable as far as their treatment of us and their hospitality. We’re fortunate to be here for the Olympics whether we’re on a boat or not.”
