Douglas Whyte bounced back into form with a double at Happy Valley during the week and with a full book of rides he can salute as Jockey Challenge favourite at Sha Tin today.
Whyte's rides on Moneymaker and Charity Joy at the Valley were those of a man inspired, and the South African will be desperate to make further inroads into the Jockeys' Championship lead held by Zac Purton - especially with new rival Joao Moreira sidelined through suspension.
Punters immediately jumped on Whyte's opening quote of $2.10 last night and he was trimmed up to even money, with equal second favourite Zac Purton drifting from $4.50 out to $5. Tye Angland remained a $4.50 second pick.
Whyte took the Jockey Challenge with 38 points midweek, for just his fourth Jockey Challenge win of the season, but with a full book of 11 rides today, sprinkled with some short-priced fancies, he should be too hard to beat.
A lot has been made of Whyte's dwindling support from John Size, but it is one from the Size yard - Luger - that will likely go around the shortest-priced runner of the day in the Griffin Trophy. That is Whyte's only ride for Size, but he has a smattering of hopes outside of that on an even day when no other jockey seems to have more than a couple of genuine chances.
