Lady luck to smile on claimer Kei Chiong in Jockey Challenge
Hong Kong's only female jockey has been riding winners lately and could surprise at good odds and steal the thunder from Joao Moreira
Kei Chiong Ka-kei's rookie season is starting to gain traction and a strong start to the day can help Hong Kong's only female jockey cause an upset in the Jockey Challenge.
Chiong got a first career double last Wednesday at Happy Valley and has notched five winners from the six meetings she has ridden at since returning from injury earlier this month. Even though Joao Moreira looks the most likely winner of the Jockey Challenge, his overnight quote of $1.30 doesn't look at all appealing and Chiong is a better bet at $9.
The 23-year-old will have to do well early in the day and Moreira will have to falter on some favourites, but Chiong has the right type of rides to help her build a winning score in the first part of the day. Perhaps it is Chiong's rides in the two dirt races that represent the best chance of success, with Manfred Man Ka-leung's Mighty Gains coming back to his favoured surface in the opener and Helen's Choice looking to go back-to-back in race seven.
Even though Helen's Choice was able to take advantage of the claim last time to get a narrow win, the Francis Lui Kin-wai-trained sprinter still gets in well, carrying just 108 pounds. Chiong's 10 pounds will also be beneficial for Danny Shum Chap-shing's Dancing Flames.
