Hong Kong Dragons win Plate final in Perth
Hong Kong’s sevens development side, the Hong Kong Dragons, captured the Plate at the Margaret River Sevens on Sunday with a convincing 21-5 victory over international invitational side Outlaws.
Gary Wong, Jonny Rees and captain Max Woodward all scored tries in the final, with Josh Peters adding two conversions and Adam Raby contributing one more.
“We had a strong performance against what was a very good team,” said the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union’s head of technical development and performance Dai Rees, who is acting as tour manager during the Perth tour.
“The boys have grown over the weekend and the final was easily our best performance so far. From a development perspective it has been a very good tournament for Hong Kong.”
On the first day of the tournament – dubbed the “Sevens in the Vines” – the Dragons lost their opening pool match 7-26 against a powerful Palmyra side, but they fought back to reach the Plate final on the back of 19-17 wins against Kalamunda and Fresh.
