Real Madrid begin defence of La Liga title with home draw against Valencia

Valencia goalkeeper Diego Alves clatters into Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain while going for the ball during their season opener at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium. Real had a frustrating start to the defence of their La Liga title as they were held to a 1-1 draw despite dominating the match. Higuain gave the champions a 10th-minute lead from Angel Di Maria's cross and Jose Mourinho's side comfortably held the visitors at bay until just before the break. Valencia showed few ideas going forward but levelled when Jonas headed in from a free kick. Alves was outstanding in the second half, keeping out a string of efforts as Real pressed forward.
