Kitchee bow out of the AFC Cup to Al Faisaly
Forward Jorge Tarres struck his 12th goal in the AFC Cup but still could not save Kitchee from an exit in the quarter-finals of the regional cup tournament.
The Spaniard found the net 10 minutes into the second half of their clash against Al Faisaly of Jordan in Amman but already the Hong Kong visitors were two goals down after the first half.
Watched by a 4,000 crowd at Amman International Stadium, Khaldoon Alhamdan opened the scoring after 18 minutes with a neat header before their Brazilian midfielder, Antonio Junior, added to the tally with three minutes left before the half-time whistle.
Coupled with their 2-1 away win over Kitchee at Mong Kok Stadium last week, Al Faisaly, the AFC Cup champions of 2005 and 2006, advanced to the semi-finals with a 4-2 aggregate win, while Kitchee failed to become the third team from Hong Kong to make it to the last four after Sun Hei (in 2007) and South China (in 2009).
Also in the semi-finals are defending champions Kuwait Sports Club, who thrashed New Radiant of Maldives 12-2 over two games.
Kitchee will need a speedy recovery from their loss as they face a tough battle against Citizen on Sunday to maintain their lead in the domestic First Division.
