'Forgive us' - Reaction to Brazil's stunning World Cup defeat
From president Dilma Rouseff on down, Brazil struggles to cope with loss
After the biggest defeat in their history, here is how key figures in Brazil reacted:
Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari asked for forgiveness from his countrymen:
“I think it was the worst day of my life.
"I will be remembered as the coach to lose 7-1, but I knew that risk when I took the job and life goes on so that is what I am going to do.
"We ask for forgiveness. To the people, please excuse us for this negative mistake.
“I’m responsible for what the team does out on the pitch – and I am to blame for this result.
“I’m sorry we could not reach our goal. The fans supported us even when it was five, six, or seven down to Germany.
“It’s not normal to concede four goals in six minutes but it can happen.
“Even Germany couldn’t believe what was happening.”
President Dilma Rousseff wrote on Twitter:
“Like every Brazilian, I am very, very said about this defeat. I am immensely sorry for all of us. Fans and our players.”
Goalkeeper Julio Cesar said the rout was inexplicable:
"Honestly, it’s hard to explain. You can’t explain the inexplicable.
"It was beautiful up to here. I thank the Brazilian people and the fans are to be congratulated for all the support they gave us."
"The players ... are going to apologise but they [the Germans] were strong, and we have to acknowledge that. After the first goal we just had a blackout, nobody expected it."
"We will go home, hug our families. And thank the fans. We got close but we couldn’t that’s it."
Defender David Luiz sobbed openly as the pain of the humiliation sank in:
"I just wanted to make my people happy. Unfortunately we couldn’t. I’m sorry, I’m sorry to all Brazilians, I just wanted to see them smile.
German star Thomas Mueller admitted he was in shock:
“This was not to be expected. I don’t know what to say to be honest.
“I can’t believe it. It’s something totally crazy. It just went well today.
“Now we have to pull through one more time, we have to fight to get this thing.”
