The two big matches of the weekend in the English Premier League are derbies and at least three teams involved are trying to make up for poor starts to the season.

Arsenal, who host Tottenham in tonight's late match, are the highest-placed of the quartet in fourth and they have performed fairly well despite winning only two of their five league games and going out of the League Cup in midweek against Southampton.

Tottenham will be trying to recover from last weekend's shock defeat by West Brom - a second consecutive home loss in the league following their 3-0 collapse against Liverpool three weeks earlier. Liverpool in general are performing below the level that took them to second last season.

Everton, the visitors in the Merseyside derby that kicks off tonight's action, are also struggling to match last season's standards with just one win in their first five games.

Recent form lines point to Arsenal as the most reliable of the quartet and tonight's win odds are reasonable, especially as Tottenham have a poor record at the Emirates stadium (eight defeats in 11 visits in league and cup).

The Liverpool defeat reinforced the doubt over whether Mauricio Pochettino's pressing style is effective against elite sides - last season his Southampton team lost five out of seven away to the sides that finished above them.

Pochettino's only victories against the top seven last season came when Southampton kept a clean sheet and it is significant that Arsenal have won eight of the 11 home league games in which they have scored in 2014 - the three failures to win were all draws, including twice against Manchester City.
