Newcastle United visited fresh misery upon faltering Manchester City with an impressive 2-0 win at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday that dumped the holders out of the League Cup.

It has been difficult the first part of this season but we believe in ourselves
Alan Pardew

Much of Newcastle’s season has been shrouded with discontentment from fans after they failed to win any of their first six Premier League games but goals from teenage forward Rolando Aarons and substitute Moussa Sissoko gave the Tyneside club a third victory in 11 days in all competitions.

“It’s a marvellous performance. Everything we wanted and tried to get from the game came off,” said manager Alan Pardew, whose side will visit Tottenham Hotspur in the last eight.

"It has been difficult the first part of this season but we believe in ourselves, have come through that spell and we have a great chance on Saturday [at home to Liverpool in the league] to give our fans something to shout about.

"This was a victory for our fans. But now we can take confidence and belief into that game," Pardew said.

Premier League champions City, who saw midfielder David Silva forced off by injury, have now gone three games without victory in all competitions ahead of Sunday’s derby with Manchester United.

“We didn’t play well enough,” City manager Manuel Pellegrini said. “We conceded two easy goals and didn’t take our chances to score.

"Of course it is a concern because we are conceding too many goals and we are not scoring," Pellegrini told Sky Sports. "Maybe it’s a lack of trust in this moment and we feel we are not in a lucky moment."
