A testimonial for Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney streamed live for the first time around the world on Facebook.

Rooney faced his only other professional club, Everton, at Old Trafford earlier tonight (3am Hong Kong time) as he prepares to start his 13th season with United.

The game, which is also Jose Mourinho’s first as United manager at home, is to raise funds for the Wayne Rooney Foundation which will distribute money to the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, Claire House Hospice, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and the Manchester United Foundation.

The game can be found via Rooney’s official page and also United’s, making it available to a global audience of 1.7 billion.

“I am delighted that through this agreement with Facebook my testimonial game will be streamed globally on both the Wayne Rooney and Manchester United Facebook pages,” Rooney said.

“It will be the first time this will have happened and will hopefully raise awareness of the foundation and increase donations.’’
