Guangzhou R&F maintain perfect Chinese Super League record with win over Changchun Yatai

Brazilian Junior Urso heads home with 20 minutes remaining at Guangdong Provincial People’s Stadium

Guangzhou R&F find themselves in the unusual position of behind ahead of city rivals Evergrande in the Chinese Super League table after Sunday’s 1-0 home win over Changchun Yatai left Dragan Stojkovic’s side with only one of three remaining 100 per cent records after two games.

Brazilian Junior Urso headed home the only goal of the game with 20 minutes remaining at Guangdong Provincial People’s Stadium as R&F added to last week’s 2-0 home win over Tianjin Quanjian.

Changchun did have a chance to avoid a second consecutive defeat after losing their opener 5-1 to Shanghai SIPG, but Nigerian striker Odion Ighalo failed to convert a penalty three minutes before Urso struck.

Ighalo signed for Changchun from English Premier League side Watford ahead of the start of the new season in a deal reported to be worth US$25.18 million.

The win means R&F join SIPG and Shandong Luneng, who beat defending champions Evergrande 2-1 on Friday, two points clear of unbeaten Shanghai Shenhua at the top of the table.

Also on Sunday, Henan Jianye shared a 1-1 draw at home with Liaoning Whowin as both sides picked up their second points of the season.
