Gregorio Manzano beats Roberto Carlos to be appointed new Guizhou Zhicheng coach

Li Bing is the first casualty of the new Chinese Super League season despite win over leaders Guangzhou R&F on Friday

Li Bing became the first managerial casualty of the new Chinese Super League season despite Guizhou Zhicheng ending Guangzhou R&F’s unbeaten start to the season, with former Beijing Guoan and Shanghai Shenhua coach Gregorio Manzano appointed ahead of former Brazil and Real Madrid defender Roberto Carlos.

Guizhou claimed their first win of the new season on Friday after beating table-topping R&F 3-1 thanks to two second-half goals from Nikica Jelavic.

But after Li said Guizhou president Wen Xiaoting was in Spain recently to interview Spaniard Manzano and former Anzhi Makhachkala, Sivasspor, Akhisar Belediyespor and Delhi Dynamos coach Carlos, the news was confirmed on Sunday.

“The president arrived in Spain on Tuesday or Wednesday, and she also met Roberto Carlos,” said Li.

Manzano, who was replaced at Shenhua by Gus Poyet in November, had confirmed he has been offered contracts by four clubs, with Guizhou believed to be the favourite having held advanced talks with the club.

He is reported to have signed a contract worth €6million (HK$51m) a year, with a bonus on offer should Guizhou avoid relegation.

The win moved Guizhou up to 11th place in the Super League table, having won three and drawn three of their earlier games at the start of the new season.
