Shanghai SIPG’s Oscar banned for eight games and fined after brawl

Brazilian instigated melee involving the majority of the players and officials from both sides against Guangzhou R&F at the weekend

Shanghai SIPG’s Brazilian midfielder Oscar has been slapped with an eight-game ban and fined 40,000 yuan (HK$45,674) for his part in the weekend’s mass Chinese Super League brawl against Guangzhou R&F, with three others hit with suspensions and fines totalling 18 games and 90,000 yuan.

Former Chelsea midfielder Oscar kicked the ball at two Guangzhou R&F opponents in stoppage time at the end of the first half at Yuexiushan Stadium on Sunday, leading to a melee involving the majority of the players and officials from both sides.

Oscar escaped with a yellow card at the time, with R&F’s Li Tixiang and SIPG’s Fu Huan eventually sent off.

Fu was hit with a six-game ban and 30,000 yuan fine and Li suspended for five games and fined 25,000 yuan for their clash with Oscar.

R&F’s Chen Zhizhao, who was booked after pushing Oscar to the ground, was banned for seven games and fined 35,000 yuan, while SIPG were fined 90,000 yuan for their role in the incident and for also failing to attend the post-match press conference.

Earlier this season, Shanghai Shenhua’s Qin Sheng was slapped with a six-month ban following a highly criticised stamp on Tianjin Quanjian’s Belgium international Axel Witsel.

Oscar joined SIPG from Chelsea at the start of the season and has played an influential part as Andre Villas-Boas’ side sit second behind Guangzhou Evergrande in the Super League table after 13 games.

He remained in Shanghai as an all domestic-based SIPG secured a place in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup after edging out third-tier side Suzhou Dongwu 15-14 on penalties following a dramatic 1-1 draw on Wednesday.

“We were very lucky to get through as we weren’t in form today and the penalty shoot-out was crazy,” said Villas-Boas after seeing Wu Lei equalise for SIPG in the fourth minute of stoppage time at the end of the second half before seeing Suzhou miss two chances to win the shoot-out.

“We’d practised penalty kicks in training as when you get to the knockout stage you will always prepare for penalties, but I never imagined that it could last for so many rounds. That was something unique.”

SIPG will face Tianjin Quanjian over two legs for a place in the semi-finals after Fabio Cannavaro’s side beat second division side Heilongjiang Lava Spring 2-1 away from home.

Former England and Russia coach Fabio Capello secured his first win in China as his Jiangsu Suning charges edged out fellow Chinese Super League side Henan Jianye 1-0, while there will be a Guangzhou derby in the last eight after R&F and 2016 winners Evergrande also progressed.

Evergrande beat Hebei CFFC 1-0, while R&F needed penalties to get past first division side Nei Mongol Zhongyou.

Shanghai Shenhua, meanwhile, will face Shandong Luneng in the last eight after Gus Poyet eased some of the pressure on himself with a 1-0 win over Beijing Guoan.

Fans continued to call for Poyet to be sacked with Shenhua 10th in the 16-team Super League and 21 points behind leaders Evergrande.

“Poyet out? We never gave a thought about it. It’s not happening and won’t happen in a long time,” said Shenhua president Wu Xiaohui.

Carlos Tevez again started for Shenhua, but it was Colombian Fredy Guarin who scored the only goal of the game at Hongkou Stadium following an assist by the Argentinian striker who has not scored since March.

“My pressure comes from my work not from the scores and results. If you work with me you will know that we work very hard every day,” said Poyet.

“I came to Shenhua for many reasons, one of them is to help this team. Maybe I won’t stay here in the future, but I hope the efforts I’m giving now can help the club in the future.

“When a team doesn’t get good results the head coach will get fired, but as a head coach I work hard every day.”
